The public has the opportunity on Friday to bid farewell to slain Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their dog, Gilbert — all of whom will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
The candidacy filing period for the seat left open by the assassination of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman opens Tuesday. The special election is scheduled for Sept. 16. A primary election will be held on Aug. 12 if needed. Potential candidates have until next Tuesday, July 22, to file to run.
"Today Minnesota lost a great leader. A formidable public servant and a fixture of the state Capitol, Melissa Hortman woke up every day determined to make our state a better place," Walz said.
