David Maland, 44, was a military veteran who worked security duty at the Pentagon during the Sept. 11 attacks, his family said.

The agent was identified as David “Chris” Maland, 44. Maland was a Blue Earth native and a graduate of Fairmont High School.

Sources tell WCAX News that a third person may have been involved in the shootout that killed a Border Patrol agent during a traffic stop in Vermont.

The name of a Border Patrol agent killed in a shooting that left one suspect dead and another injured and in custody was released on Tuesday.

David "Chris" Maland, 44, was fatally shot in the line of duty on Tuesday in Coventry, Vermont, according to the Vermont State Police. Maland was an agent with the U.S. Border Patrol Swanton Sector and was conducting a traffic stop at the time.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the slain agent was David C. Maland. The FBI, meanwhile, said the other person killed was a German national on a current visa.
