Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has taken steps that will give the Senate the option to set up a vote next week on a government funding extension as the threat of a shutdown looms at the end of the month.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives will vote on legislation on Wednesday that pairs a must-pass spending bill with tighter voting rules, setting up an election year clash with the Democratic-majority Senate that risks a partial government shutdown.

The House has rejected Speaker Mike Johnson's bill to temporarily fund the government. The legislation that failed Wednesday would have linked temporary government funding with a mandate that states require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.
