As of Tuesday afternoon, California's average is $4.58 per gallon, less than the average from more than a week ago of $4.65 per gallon, or from a month ago at $4.78 per gallon, according to data from the American Automobile Association.

The average fuel price in state declined about 19 cents since last month. According to the EIA, gas prices across the state in the last year have been as low as $4.09 on Dec. 23, 2024, and as high as $4.73 on April 7, 2025. A year ago, the average gas price in California was 4% higher at $4.54 per gallon.

Beginning Tuesday, California drivers will pay almost 2 cents more per gallon at gas stations across the state. The price of gas will increase from 59.6 cents to 61.2 cents as part of an annual adjustment for inflation. The gas tax, enacted in 2017, helps pay for road repairs.
