It’s not unheard of for two hurricanes to impact the same area. But it’s been a century since Tampa Bay saw a direct hit.

The last time the eye of a major storm like Hurricane Milton directly struck Tampa Bay was 1921 when the city was a sleepy backwater.

Milton intensified quickly Monday over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. It had maximum sustained winds of 180 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
