The Laken Riley Act is roiling the Senate Democratic Conference, as senators believe their party bungled immigration and border security in 2024 but aren’t happy about the swift passage of a bill they view as terrible policy.

In a 64-35 vote, the Senate passed an immigration bill that mandates the detention of undocumented individuals accused of theft or burglary. The measure is now headed to the House, where it is expected to pass, probably becoming the first piece of legislation President Donald Trump signs into law.
