Tarzana, Los Angeles, United States - January 10, 2025 A towering cloud of smoke billowed ominously over the San Fernando Valley on Friday, January 10, as the Palisades Fire pushed northward, prompting the first evacuation warnings for Tarzana and Encino. The wildfire, which began on January 7 south of Mulholland Drive, has wreaked havoc across Los Angeles County, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Residents of Tarzana witnessed the encroaching flames firsthand, with X user Joey Weinberg capturing and sharing a striking video of the smoke engulfing the skyline. This unsettling development marked an escalation for the suburban neighborhoods of the valley, which had previously been spared the fire’s wrath. As the blaze advanced, the Los Angeles Fire Department issued additional evacuation alerts for Brentwood, extending to the 405 Freeway—a corridor that includes the Skirball and Getty Centers. Both cultural landmarks remain shuttered, with plans to reopen on January 15 and 16, respectively. The Palisades Fire has already torched more than 21,000 acres and destroyed or damaged over 5,700 structures. With containment hovering at just 8%, firefighters from as far as San Diego and San Bernardino counties have joined the battle. Despite their efforts, the fire has claimed five lives and displaced approximately 150,000 residents under mandatory evacuation orders. Across Los Angeles County, wildfires have collectively burned a staggering 36,165 acres, destroyed or damaged over 12,300 structures, and claimed 11 lives. The Eaton Fire, which has ravaged nearly 14,000 acres in the Altadena and Pasadena area, remains only 3% contained. Six fatalities have been confirmed there, with over 7,000 structures impacted and thousands still evacuated. More than 1,500 firefighters, led by L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, are working tirelessly to bring the fires under control. However, with dry conditions and relentless winds, the battle against the flames is far from over. As the Palisades Fire bears down on the San Fernando Valley, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential evacuation. The full scope of destruction remains uncertain, but for many, the smoke-filled skies are a grim reminder of the fires’ devastating reach.
